Default Excel output

I need to create an excel spreadsheet from some data in my database. I have created a stored procedure to retrieve the needed data.
Question:
1. Do I have to create a crystal report laying out the format, then go to
report options in SL and have Excel be the choice ?
2. Can I go direct to Excel ?

thanks.
